Belinda McComb has always been someone who stays active and engaged. As a mother of two and a former physical education teacher of over 20 years, movement was a natural part of her life. Whether she was teaching, spending time with family, or simply going about her day, she was used to being on her feet and in control of her routine.
But over time, chronic back pain began to slowly take that away.
What started as manageable discomfort turned into persistent, daily pain. By 2017, things had worsened significantly. Diagnosed with osteoarthritis and multiple disc issues in her spine, Belinda found herself trying different treatments just to get through the day.
At first, some injections helped—but eventually, the relief didn’t last.
Then came a point where everything changed.
“I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t work. I didn’t even want to get up,” Belinda shared. “All I wanted to do was sleep the pain away.”
The pain began affecting every part of her life. Simple, everyday tasks—like putting on her socks, getting dressed, or even walking across the room—became incredibly difficult. She was no longer just managing pain—she was living in it.
“I was basically in confinement,” she said. “When your back hurts that bad, it feels like your whole body hurts. You just don’t want to do anything.”
Belinda came to Tennessee Valley Pain Consultants in tears, desperate for relief and unsure of what options were left.
But from the moment she walked through the doors, something felt different.
“From day one, it was, ‘How can we help you?’” she said. “I didn’t feel like I had to jump through hoops or prove anything. They listened.”
After reviewing her extensive medical history, the care team reassured her of something she needed to hear—her pain was real, and they were ready to help her find relief.
Soon after, Belinda received a lumbar epidural steroid injection.
“That injection changed my whole perspective,” she said. “It was almost overnight. I could tell the difference in a day.”
The results were life-changing.
“I feel like I can walk a mile now,” she said. “Before, I was afraid to even try. Now I’m moving again, exercising, and getting back to normal life.”
For the first time in a long time, Belinda felt like herself again.
“I even ran down the hall the other day to grab the phone,” she said with a laugh. “I couldn’t have done that before.”
She’s now able to stay active, take care of herself, and enjoy daily life without constant pain holding her back.
“I basically got my life back.”
Beyond the physical relief, Belinda says what truly sets her experience apart is the people.
“Everyone there is fast, friendly, personal, and fun,” she said. “They ask about my kids, they check on me—you don’t feel like just another patient sitting in a waiting room.”
That level of care made a lasting impression.
“It’s not stuffy or cold like some offices,” she added. “They truly care about you as a person.”
Now, Belinda is passionate about encouraging others who may be struggling with chronic pain—especially those who feel unsure or hesitant about treatment.
“A lot of people are scared of injections, but it can truly change your life,” she said. “If you don’t want surgery and don’t want to rely on pain pills, this is something you should consider.”
She also appreciates a care approach that prioritizes conservative treatment first.
“If the injections are working, why rush into surgery?” she said. “That made sense to me.”
Looking back on her journey, Belinda describes her experience in the simplest—and most powerful way: “Awesome and amazing—from beginning to end.”
Her story is a reminder that relief is possible, and that the right care can do more than reduce pain. It can restore independence, confidence, and quality of life.
